In this talk, we will review the history of calculus of variations, a mathematical field which aims at characterizing minimizers (or maximizers) of some problems. For example, given two points in the plane, what is the path along which an object would slide in the shortest possible time between these points? This problem is one of the fundational problems of calculus of variations. It was solved by Newton, Bernouilli and Leibniz. We will explain the development of the main ideas of the fields, as pionneered by Euler and Lagrange and present some of the current challenges of the field.
The lecture will be in English; IB, A levels students interested in Mathematics are very welcome!
